Another baptism day has rolled around for the Brown Family. So hard to believe our little “Vinnie” is big enough to be baptized! We are so proud of our Gavin Lance. He was grinning from ear to ear! This baptism was a little different for us. We decided to have Gavin and his cousin Gabi baptized together in Bountiful. For whatever reason, it worked out that our Stake wasn’t holding baptisms in July and Gavin would have to wait until August if we held it there. So, rather than having Gabi’s baptism in July and Gavin’s in August, we thought we would make it easier on everyone and just combine them…..but hold in in Bountiful.
Once again, just like the 4th, it didn’t quite pan out ideally, but then again….what in life ever does? Saturday, July 7th started for us at about 5:45am when Scott came running into our bedroom gagging, saying he was about to hurl. Michael and I wide-eyed glanced at each other and ran him to the bathroom. We both looked at each other and said, “What are we going to do?” Everything was all set; Michael’s parents were in town, we’d bought all the food we needed for the luncheon afterward, Gavin had even received a special tie-tack from Grandpa & Grandma Brown with his baptism date on it, we made all sorts of special arrangements to have Gavin baptized in Bountiful with his cousin, instead of here, because it would be more convenient for the family and now it was coming unraveled! Michael was way more put out than I was, surprisingly. But, it all managed to work out. Like a friend of mine says….there were a couple hiccups, but it still happened!
We ran around chaotically that morning trying to get our act together, all the while trying to keep Scott away from everyone else. Michael has a business trip the following week and I just kept reviewing in my mind how I would dread being left at home with vomiting children for a week while he was gone. That, more or less, was what I was trying for most; to keep it some-what contained. So, we all got ready, quickly put Scoots in his Sunday clothes and piled into two cars. Healthy kids in the little Civic with me, and sick kid/recovering baby in the van with Michael. It was easier and we had to move less seats that way. We took two because we weren’t quite sure yet how this was going to play out; the vomit and everything. He wasn’t even holding down water, up to a couple hours before we left. Well, Scott made it in the car for the car ride, without vomiting. He even made it through the baptism without vomiting. I made sure not to give him anything to eat or drink that morning, hoping this would be the outcome. The talks and songs were in the chapel during the baptism and poor Scott laid on the last pew, with a towel under him and a garbage can in his lap. He said he just wanted to sleep and laid down, but once it all started, he became attentive and sat up. I felt so bad. He was supposed to do a “spotlight” with Jared, where we give a little talk about Gavin. He was also supposed to help sing in the musical number, but had to sit that one out too. He was a little sad. Luckily though, prayers were answered and he didn’t vomit at the church.
Scott did, however, let it loose as soon as we got to Maren’s house for the luncheon. Thank heaven her house is rather roomy so we were able to put him in a corner without feeling too badly that he might be infecting others. He was able to rest a little, but kept throwing up. Eventually, we dared make the trek home and he didn’t throw up in the car. PHEW! Back to home we went and straight to his room we sent him, where he spent a day laying down, watching shows on the laptop and sleeping. Fortunately, he didn’t throw up again after all that. Sunday we kept him home from church, just to be sure and by that night, he’d eaten all his meals and didn’t toss any of them. So, we let him out of his cage today (Monday). The boys started swim lessons today and I’m so glad he was healthy in time!
